Wineglass Bay's crescent remained inaccessible to vessels larger than a dinghy until 1998, when the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service granted the first commercial marine permits for Freycinet's eastern coastline.
Before that, every visitor walked the four-kilometre track over the saddle of Mount Aman, a two-hour climb that kept daily numbers below three hundred even in peak summer. The permit system changed the bay's visitor profile overnight. By 2003, half of all Wineglass Bay arrivals came by water, and the jetty at Coles Bay became the de facto staging point for a fleet of aluminium pontoon cruisers, rigid inflatables, and twin-hulled catamarans purpose-built to handle the tidal chop off Schouten Island.
The appeal is logistical as much as scenic. A Wineglass Bay cruise from Coles Bay compresses a five-hour return hike into a ninety-minute round trip, leaving the rest of the day open for Hazards Beach, Sleepy Bay, or the rock platforms at Cape Tourville. Departure windows run from 09:00 through mid-afternoon, with most operators launching on a two-hour cycle to stagger anchorage in the bay itself. The route threads between the Hazards' pink granite prows, skirts the kelp beds off Refuge Island, and rounds into the protected arc where the Tasman Sea loses its swell. Dolphins track the wake between May and September; fur seals haul out on the rocks near Whitewater Wall year-round.
Most charters include a prepared lunch served on deck or at anchor, with local Tasmanian produce and wines from the Freycinet coast. Adults-only departures eliminate commentary and children, replacing both with longer anchorage time and a second wine service. Water taxi options offer point-to-point transport for walkers completing the Isthmus Track one-way, boarding at Coles Bay and disembarking at Hazards Beach to bypass the saddle descent.
Freycinet National Park's twenty-four-dollar-fifty-five conservation fee applies to all marine arrivals, collected at the jetty before boarding or bundled into the charter rate. The fee funds track maintenance, weed control, and the seasonal ranger presence at Wineglass Bay's southern lookout. Operators hold Parks Tasmania permits renewable annually, with passenger limits and no-anchor zones enforced by GPS monitoring. The system has kept erosion minimal even as annual visitor numbers to the bay passed sixty thousand in 2025.
